This gear clutch assembly is a planetary gear unit for the 500W hub motor of the Engwe M20 fat electric bike. Inside a geared hub motor, the planetary clutch transfers motor power to the wheel while allowing freewheeling when coasting. The planetary gears mesh with the motor's ring gear, and the steel carrier plate houses the one-way clutch mechanism. When the clutch fails — typically from worn gears, seized bearings, or stripped engagement surfaces — the motor either slips under load, makes grinding noises, or loses power completely. Replacing the clutch and gear assembly restores smooth power delivery and quiet operation without replacing the entire motor wheel.
